Building Insulation Market Opportunity

Graphite EPS for Passivhaus & Low-Energy Building Insulation

Grey EPS board cuts thermal conductivity by about 20% versus white EPS — the material of choice for Passivhaus, ETICS and low-energy retrofit. Here is the production line you need to make it.

One short rule: lower λ means thinner walls for the same U-value.

The Material

Why Grey EPS Owns the High-Performance Wall

Graphite EPS — sold as grey EPS, GPS, or under brand names such as BASF Neopor — embeds fine graphite particles inside ordinary expanded polystyrene. Those particles reflect and absorb the infrared radiant heat that would otherwise pass through the foam, lowering thermal conductivity to roughly 0.030–0.032 W/(m·K) against 0.035–0.038 for white EPS.

That ~20% gain is exactly what ultra-low-energy construction needs. The Passive House (Passivhaus) standard drives building envelopes toward very low U-values, and tightening energy codes are pulling the wider market the same way. Grey EPS lets a wall hit those targets with a thinner, lighter board — saving façade depth and material on every project — which is why it has become the default insulation board for Passivhaus, ETICS/EIFS façades and deep retrofits. EPS thermal-insulation board itself is governed by standards such as EN 13163 and ASTM C578.

Side by Side

White EPS vs Graphite EPS

Seven properties that explain why the building-insulation market keeps moving to grey board.

Property White EPS Graphite (Grey) EPS
Appearance White beads & board Silver-grey beads & board (graphite particles)
Thermal conductivity (λ) ~0.035–0.038 W/(m·K) ~0.030–0.032 W/(m·K) — about 20% lower
How it works Air pockets resist conduction only Graphite reflects & absorbs infrared radiant heat
Wall thickness for same R-value Thicker board needed Thinner board hits the same U-value
Typical board density 15–25 kg/m³ 15–30 kg/m³
Target market General insulation & packaging Passivhaus, ETICS/EIFS, low-energy retrofit
Raw bead Standard EPS resin Graphite-enhanced resin (Neopor-type / grey EPS)

λ and density figures are typical industry ranges — exact board values depend on your bead grade and target density, set on the pre-expander.

The Opportunity

Why Add Graphite EPS to Your Line

A higher-margin board that matches where building codes — and demand — are heading.

Hits Passivhaus U-Values With Thinner Walls

The Passive House standard pushes exterior walls toward U ≤ 0.15 W/(m²·K). At ~20% lower λ, graphite EPS reaches that target with noticeably thinner board than white EPS — saving wall thickness, façade depth and material on every square metre.

Same Lightweight, Easy-to-Handle EPS

Graphite EPS keeps the low weight, rigidity and easy cutting of standard EPS. Installers work it the same way on ETICS / EIFS façades — no new trade skills, just a better-performing board.

A Premium Product From the Same Line

Grey EPS board commands a higher price per cubic metre than white. With the right pre-expander control and a graphite-rated cutting line, your existing EPS plant can add a premium SKU for the energy-efficient building market.

Aligned With Tightening Building Codes

European and global energy-performance rules keep raising the bar on building envelopes. Graphite EPS is one of the most cost-effective ways for converters to keep boards inside ever-stricter U-value limits.

From Material to Machine

The Equipment a Graphite EPS Line Needs

Grey EPS shares most of a white-EPS plant, but two stages — pre-expansion and cutting — make or break board quality. Each block links to full specs.

Precise Pre-Expansion (the critical step)

Graphite absorbs heat fast, so grey EPS demands tighter steam and temperature control than white EPS — too hot and beads can self-heat. Our pre-expanders offer density precision down to ±0.3 kg/m³ and ATEX-rated options built specifically for FR-graphite production.

EPS Pre-Expander (SPJY / PE series) →

Block Molding for Insulation Board

Aged grey beads are steam-fused into large blocks at controlled density and pressure — the feedstock for every insulation panel. Consistent block density is what keeps your λ value and board strength in spec.

EPS Block Molding Machine →

Graphite / FR Board Cutting Line

Grey and flame-retardant EPS is denser and more abrasive than white, so it needs thicker nichrome wire and a slower, heavier cutting line. Our SPQ-FR line is purpose-built for graphite-EPS and Class B1 FR board to ±0.4 mm thickness tolerance.

Graphite-Enhanced Raw Material

We also supply graphite EPS resin (HF grades) and can match the bead to your pre-expander recipe library, so a new converter does not have to source material separately to start grey-board trials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Graphite EPS Production FAQ

What is graphite EPS and why is it used for Passivhaus insulation? +
Graphite EPS (also called grey EPS, GPS or by the brand name Neopor) is expanded polystyrene whose beads contain fine graphite particles. The graphite reflects and absorbs infrared radiant heat, cutting thermal conductivity to about 0.030–0.032 W/(m·K) versus roughly 0.035–0.038 for white EPS — around 20% better. That lets a Passivhaus or low-energy wall hit its target U-value with a thinner, lighter board, which is why grey EPS dominates high-performance building insulation.
Can I make graphite EPS on my existing white-EPS line? +
Often yes, but two stages need attention. Pre-expansion is the critical one: graphite absorbs heat quickly, so grey beads need tighter steam and temperature control to avoid self-heating — a pre-expander with fine density control (and, for flame-retardant grades, ATEX rating) is strongly recommended. Cutting is the second: grey and FR board is denser and more abrasive, so a standard hot-wire cutter struggles. A graphite-rated cutting line with thicker wire solves it. Block molding usually adapts with recipe changes.
What extra equipment does a graphite EPS line need versus white EPS? +
The biggest differences are a pre-expander with precise density control (±0.3 kg/m³ class, ATEX option for FR-graphite) and a dedicated graphite / FR cutting line such as our SPQ-FR, which uses thicker 0.5–0.8 mm wire and a slower, heavier feed to cut dense grey board cleanly. The pre-expander, ageing silos and block molding machine are shared with white EPS production with recipe adjustments.
What U-value can graphite EPS achieve for a Passivhaus wall? +
The Passive House standard generally pushes exterior walls toward U ≤ 0.15 W/(m²·K), and many projects aim near 0.10. Because graphite EPS has a lower λ, you reach the same U-value with less thickness than white EPS — the exact board thickness depends on the wall build-up, so it is calculated per project. We supply the equipment to produce the board; the building physics are set by the project designer.
Is graphite EPS board profitable to produce? +
Grey EPS board sells at a premium over white because of its higher insulation performance and its fit with energy-efficient construction. For an existing converter, adding a graphite-rated pre-expander setting and cutting line opens a higher-margin SKU without rebuilding the whole plant. We help size the equipment and estimate payback against your target output and local board pricing.
Can you supply a complete graphite EPS production line from one vendor? +
Yes. We build the pre-expander, block molding machine and graphite / FR cutting line in-house, and can also supply graphite EPS raw material, so there are no integration gaps between suppliers. Our equipment is CE / ISO certified, typically around 30% below European prices, with a 5-year warranty, 24-hour response and on-site commissioning support.
